Women in charge Dee Dee Myers makes the case that the world needs female leadership

By JULIE HINDS

FREE PRESS POP CULTURE WRITER

D
ee Dee Myers knows something about breaking glass ceilings.
During the Clinton administration, she became the first woman to hold the job of White House press secretary. Now she’s a commentator and author whose book, “Why Women Should Rule the World,” explores the strengths of female leadership.
On May 6, Myers is to be the keynote speaker at the 2009 Lois Linden Nelson Woman’s World, a daylong event hosted by the Sisterhood of Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
She spoke to the Free Press recently from Washington, D.C., about everything from Michelle Obama’s style strategy to what she’s teaching her children about
 women and work.
QUESTION: What can women do in these uncertain times to feel more empowered?
ANSWER:
Women have to own the value of the perspective, the experi ence, the skills that we bring that are sometimes different than what men bring. … They have to believe the world will be better if there are more women in positions of power. It’s not about empowering one woman be cause it makes everybody feel good and it’s politically correct. It’s about making changes that will benefit their families, their communities and the world.
Q: Michelle Obama is getting attention as a style-setter. Do you think she’ll emerge as more of a political force?
A:
I think she probably will. … I don’t think Michelle Obama ever set out to be a style icon, but she realized very early on that people were going to be looking at what she wore and how she entertained. … She decided she was going to make that work in her favor and I think she’s done a great job. … She and the president have brought a certain glamour back to Washington, but they’ve done it in a way that’s accessible. She’s fashionable, but it’s J. Crew. … As the public gets to know her and likes her and trusts her, that gives her a lot of power to make progress on the issues she cares about.
Q: As a working mom, what’s the most important thing you’re trying to teach your kids about women and work?
A:
That everybody has something to contribute and that we should be able to choose how to pursue those things that are im portant to us. … When I was single and working at the White House, work was my world. Now that my kids are young, flex ibility is the most important quality I have in my work. … You don’t have to make a decision at 25 or 35 about what the rest of your life is going to be.
Q: Do you foresee a time when you can write “Women are Ruling the World: How Are They Doing?”
A:
I’m optimistic about it. I do think if you look around, it’s increasingly unremarkable that there are women (in certain jobs). I was the first woman as White House press secretary. And then Dana Perino was the second. I think the next time we have one, it will hardly be an issue that she’s a wom an. … Critical mass is getting to the point where everyone stops counting. In some places, we’re getting there.

Myers: Women make things better

In “Why Women Should Rule The World” ($14.99, Harper paperback), Dee Dee  Myers takes a look at the key assets that women bring to fields like politics,  business and academia.
Myers makes the case that more leader ship roles for women could make things  better for everyone. She doesn’t argue that women’s priorities are superior to men’s.  Rather, she writes, “when women are empowered, they can speak from the  experiences of their own lives, they often address different, previously neglected  issues.”

Boutique show, luncheon
draw women to annual event

By Jennie Miller
C & G Staff Writer

SOUTHFIELD — More than 700 women are expected to attend a boutique show and luncheon on Wednesday, May 6, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The annual event, the Lois Linden Nelson Woman’s World, will feature an array of shopping, as well as a lunchtime visit from Dee Dee Myers, a onetime White House press secretary for President Bill Clinton and current bestselling author of “Why Women Should Rule the World.”

“It’s a great day for members of the synagogue, as well as the community,” said Denise Kalt, a co-chair of the event. “The shopping boutiques (have) wonderful items at great prices. And the lunch and the speaker — we always tried to pick somebody who is really interesting for all the different women that attend, whether it’s mothers, grandmothers, daughters, friends.”

Myers fits the mold perfectly, said Karen Couf-Cohen, a co-chair of the event.

“(Her book) really poses the question: What would happen if women played a key role in global governing?” Couf-Cohen said. “She proposes it would be a very different world, and really one that incorporates the dynamics of how they communicate and nurture and try to make things better. … This really seemed like the perfect speaker to talk about women and how they could impact the world.”

Last year’s event featured author Lauren Weisberger, who wrote “The Devil Wears Prada,” and drew some 700 women to the event.

While attendance at the luncheon comes at a $54 cost, local retailers supplied gifts, jewelry and apparel for the boutique show, which is free to the public.

“We will have a wide variety of vendors that will have very chic apparel and gifts,” Couf-Cohen said. “Some are vendors that do boutique shows exclusively; some are retailers such as Lori Karbal, who does business in Birmingham, and she has various gifts and accessories; The Annex in Royal Oak, which sells women’s apparel; Babara’s Paper Bag, (which offers) stationary and gifts in Birmingham; and The Art Loft in Birmingham.”

New eco-friendly “green” goods will also be featured.

The annual raffle also draws some interest, Couf-Cohen said, adding that this year’s many prizes include four tickets to the Jonas Brothers concert.

The entire event is a fundraiser for the synagogue.

“We do fundraising for our congregation for Israel and for MAZON, which is a Jewish charity that deals with hunger,” Couf-Cohen said. “And due to the economy, people are having a harder time paying our tuition and dues (for) our religious school and nursery school, and so our fundraising also goes toward tuition assistance.”

“It’s something very important for the synagogue, to help with their needs,” Kalt said.

Congregation Shaarey Zedek is located at 27375 Bell Road in Southfield. For tickets and event information, call (248) 357-5544 or visit www.shaareyzedek.org.

Shaarey Zedek event adds “green” to the return of its Boutique Show.
Sisterhood of Congregation Shaarey Zedek of Oakland County will host its 2009 Lois Linden Nelson Woman's World from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 6 - and has proudly added a "touch of green" to its annual event.

Affordable and cherished Judaic gifts and time-honored Boutique Show favorites, including chic apparel and jewelry offerings - will be back (in time for Mother's Day) - refreshed, renewed and reinvented. And new eco-friendly "green" goods such as fabulous purses and totes will be featured as well as unusual energy-, space- and weight-efficient Israeli expandable vases.

Attendees to the sisterhood's premier fundraiser also will enjoy the Beth Hayeled Nursery School's Green Gallery of artwork illustrating the theme "What would a Healthy Earth Look Like?"

In support of the economic downturn, the group has invited many Michigan-based retailers to the Boutique Show. Some of the local vendors include Lori Karbal and Art Loft of Birmingham, and the The Annex of Royal Oak. The sisterhood hopes to provide exposure opportunities for these businesses that have been hit hard with a decrease in foot traffic because of the economy.

"Buying local for this event is good for the economy and our environment," said Boutique Show chairperson Karyn Sokol of Birmingham.

This event is open to the community and the boutiques require no event ticket and is free of charge to come shop.

"We also are thrilled to announce our keynote speaker will be Dee Dee Myers, former White House press secretary for President Clinton, and New York Times best-selling author of Why Women Should Rule the World," said event co-chairs Karen Couf Cohen and Denise Kalt, both of Franklin.

In 1993, at 31, Myers was the first woman to hold the job of press secretary. She went on to co-host CNBC's show Equal Time and serve as consultant and contributor on NBC's acclaimed The West Wing. She is a political commentator on MSNBC and a contributor to Vanity Fair and writes and lectures on women's issues.

Her book considers the question: What would happen if women ruled the world? Myers contends that everything would change, and politics would most definitely not be "as usual." Myers will be signing her book after the luncheon.

Also new this year, the first "Woman of Valor" award will be given to Leypsa Groner, Shaarey Zedek's "rebbitzen in chief," who is celebrating 50 years in Detroit this spring. She is wife to Rabbi Emeritus Irwin Groner.

This year's raffle prizes include a flat-screen TV, packages at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham and the Ritz-Carlton in Dearborn, tickets to entertainment and sporting events, a beautiful piece of jewelry from Tapper's Diamonds & Fine Jewelry designed by David Yurman and four tickets to the Jonas Brothers concert.

Luncheon tickets begin at $54. For tickets and event information, call (248) 357-5544 ext. 48 or go to www.shaareyzedek.org.
